Sydney weather: Severe thunderstorms lash city, Blue Mountains

Western Sydney has borne the brunt of heavy rain, destructive winds and lightning after severe thunderstorms swept in from the Blue Mountains and lashed the city.

Power lines and trees were brought down as the severe weather system pummelled Parramatta, Fairfield, Liverpool, Mona Vale and Engadine.
About 20,000 home and businesses across western Sydney are without power and flash flooding has hit from Newtown in the city's inner west to Moorebank, in the city's south-west.
Four people, including two children, had to be rescued from rising waters in Newbridge Road.
The State Emergency Service (SES) said it had received more than 300 calls for help so far.
Two houses on the Central Coast were also struck by lightning which set fire to an electrical box.
Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Katarina Kovacevic said thunderstorm activity had eased in Sydney and further thunderstorms were not expected until around 5:00pm.
"The northern parts of the state, such as the Tenterfield area, the Southern Tablelands and the ACT are seeing much more thunderstorm activity at the moment," she said.
